Artist's Comments

ultranic-comics won the 5555 kiriban, and requested a pic of his original character, Kuroxan. *ultranic-comics and I have had some, er, discussion about dynamic posing in the past, so therefore I knew that if I didn't achieve a dynamic pose, he'd mock me mercilessly. But I think I might have managed to do it, in some tiny manner. ;)

Anyway, here ya go, hope you like it, dude. :) I probably screwed up on his costume somewhere, but I'm going to claim it as artistic license. :D

Linework in pen on comic board, coloring in Photoshop. Fake Background no Jutsu! That's my ninja way!

Thanks! :D

Of course, it's now, *after* I upload it, where I see where my shadow in the linework makes his butt look horribly broken. *sigh*

Hi.
I still didn't got enought time to wright you all
things I want to tell you on your reply on
my form post, and your comments.
And, I think that "thank you" just isn't enough...

This is a great picture, but, there is one thing that
is just wrong on it...

The way he is holding wakizashy.
It is un natural. (worng, not good).

I have a collection of cold weapons, and I fight
with my friend with bambus sticks, and we do a lot of stuff,
and from my experience I can tell you that you hold your
sworf (knife, stick, weapon) with all fingers wery tight.
And there is NO way you would let loos your index and pinky finger...
Not in a fight...
Maybe if you are showing of...

beside that, grat picture... :)

hope to hear from you soon! :)

HEY, *ultranic-comics! *points at comment* See what I mean?! :D

Thanks for your comments, and you've actually just illustrated perfectly something I was discussing with * ultranic-comics the other day, where I told him that you had to make your martial arts plausible in art and writing, even if it was a fantasy world where you were making things up, because people who knew them would point out everything that you got wrong.

Anyway, I actually didn't intend it to be a formal wakizashi; it was a random dagger-type thing that just happened to be drawn that way. So we'll put it down to him being all show-offy, like people in movies who hold their guns sideways. ;) I expect that wearing a scarf with really long ends around your neck would be even less of a good thing to do in combat -- it's the perfect choke-hold for your opponent.

:D It took a while to come up with -- it wasn't until I thought "hey, maybe he should be upside down..." that it came together. Before that, he was always posing, instead of being caught in action, and the picture was sort of dead because there was no story implied.

This particular Fake Background no Jutsu involved throwing on a few brushstrokes of various shades of purpley-blue, a motion blur, and then smudging around, then another motion blur. :D
