This tutorial shows one of the ways I do digital painting. I used Painter 7.0 for this example, but the same sort of thing can be done in Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro, Open Canvas, The Gimp, or almost any other computer graphics program. I used only two tools - the Brushes->Round Camel for applying color, and Liquid->Just Add Water for blending, and you can substitute any paintbrush/airbrush and smudging/blurring/blending tool. This is a modified comic-type style, where I fill an area with a base color and then apply highlights and shadows to it, and I use this when I'm painting from a well-developed lineart sketch. If I started without the lineart, I'd use a different, more painterly, method of laying in my colors.

Click on the arrow to download. Unzip it and use a web browser to open 'index.html' to read the tutorial.

Edit 6/19/2006 The zip files seems to have gone walkabout on me - there's a version on my webspace here.

Spiffy. It's very informative and easy-to-follow, and it's good that the technique is pretty simple and universal. It's nice to know I'm not the only one who uses a technique like this, too. :o (watching my friends shade makes me feel like a freak because they all do it differently from me XD)

Thanks. :) There's all sorts of techniques out there, and I'm usually fairly liberal about them, figuring that if it works for you, then it works for you and who am I to say nay. Of course, I am completely unreasonable about use of the Dodge and Burn tools but I admit to being prejudiced against them. :)

This version works best for me when I'm painting from lineart. If the lineart is there, I'm going to incorporate it into the pic no matter what, and I don't do a good job at painting on top of it. If I don't want the lines in it, I have to not use lineart and to start from the basic canvas with paint.

Ooh this is sweet, it's very very useful! I've been looking forever for a tutorial about giving a painted/realistic look that was actually good, and this is the winner *_* Thank you so much!
Thank you! If you upload anything you do using it, let me know; I'd like to see. :D

That's really cool; it's actually a little different from how I've seen most artists work. Interesting. :) Great ideas in there though.

Can I ask, what Painter are you using? Corel?
Thanks! Yeah, it's basically modifed from comics coloring or even really blended cel-style shading. I've done more traditional painterly stuff where I lay in colors and don't blend as much, but it all depends on what the particular picture calls for.

I'm using Painter 7.0, which is the version where they were calling themselves Procreate for a while, though they went back to Corel for 8.0, from what I understand.

AH! AHA! THANK YOU! You've just answered a question that's been bothering me for months. Bloody Corel changing its bloody name. :shakefist:

I've never been able to really understand that program. I could never find a proper brush that would just do what the 'brush' tool in photoshop did. But I might try again now.
Heh. Yeah, Painter's really intimidating at first. I'm slowly learning how to use the various tools, and I've had the stupid thing for a year now. But I've used it for long enough that I don't want to go back to Photoshop for my coloring, because I'm learning how to do many different things with the coloring.
